Award winning Belfast actress Abigail McGibbon returns to the Lyric stage with her controversial one woman show THE C***OF QUEEN CATHERINE. After sell-out runs in the UK she brings her ground-breaking performance back to her home city with The Belfast Ensemble this June.
Fresh after her success in ‘Streetcar Named Desire’, award-winning actress Abigail McGibbon reprises her role in this controversial and critically acclaimed work by Belfast composer/writer Conor Mitchell. McGibbon plays Catherine of Aragon, Henry the Eight’s first wife whose divorce sparked the spilt that Ireland still feels today. Produced by THE BELFAST ENSEMBLE with their trademark mix of music and video, this piece was first seen by audiences here in 2017 and returns in a re-worked main stage production for the Lyric.
Actress, Abigail McGibbon said “This word has power. It’s used by the character – a woman, about herself. About her body. About how she was reduced to being just a womb by the men that controlled her. And she was destroyed by it. She was educated, smart, with f***ing guts. She stood up to the most powerful men in Europe and became the first ‘first wife’ in history. But she’s much, much more than that. She’s a martyr, a saint, an icon and a woman who brought Europe to the brink of catastrophe. I think we need a Catherine today!”
